Bonner Co. Search & Rescue spent 6 days in March 2010 assisting the Sheriff's Department with the crime scene on Bandy Road.  For 12 to 17 hours per night, 2 to 3 SAR volunteers  guarded the entrance to the property  in order to preserve the crime scene.  During some of those days, the volunteers assisted in searching for evidence in specified areas.

Bonner County Search & Rescue, North Idaho Search & Rescue and West Pend Oreille Fire District personnel mounted a search Friday for a Spirit Lake man who was wading in the Priest River when he was swept downstream.  The search was suspended at about midnight and resumed on Saturday morning. The BCSAR snowmobile rescue team reached the 17 year old hiker about 2:00am Thursday morning.  He was found on a hillside between Baldy and Schweitzer Mountains where he was waiting for rescuers.  Other than being cold and wet was just fine.  He had been able to maintain cell phone contact until the battery gave out about 11:30pm.  To read the full article that appeared in the

The Discovery Channel has broadcast a reenactment of one BCSAR's searches in their program, "Storm Warning".  Two groups of teens on a church field trip to Schweitzer were lost and spent the night in heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.  Both groups dug-in for the night and waited for daylight and a change in the weather.  One group was found early the next morning when they wandered on to a member's property.  The other group, two brothers, was found by BCSAR's snowmobile team led by Matt and Mark Linscott, who were featured in the cable TV segment.

Saturday afternoon of August 17, 1996, a toddler was reported missing.  BCSAR personnel, dive teams, dog teams, NW Search Dogs, friends, and neighbors searched through the night.  By 9:00 am Sunday, 181 individuals had signed in to help search for the two and a half year old.  Members from area churches were released to go and help search while others stayed to add their prayers to those of the family and search personnel.

The little girl was found safe and sound by one of the volunteers.  She was taken to BGH as a precaution and released a short time later.

Bonner & Boundary SAR members bring a man they found to a waiting helicopter for transport to the hospital.

79 year old found after a 20 hour air and ground search.  She wasn't too sure what all the fuss was about but was happy for the ride home.

This mission occurred on Make-A-Difference Day while many members were at the Bonner Mall setting up displays and demonstrations.  Activities were terminated as members joined the rescue.

A few other successful missions

Members worked with other emergency personnel to evacuate of an assisted living facility during a gas leak.

Sometimes the SAR mission is more Rescue than Search.

There are times when searches do not end in rescues.  Then, the mission is to assist law enforcement and coroner's office in returning them to their loved ones.

When the Viet Nam Memorial, The Wall, came to Sandpoint, BCSAR and other volunteers were there around the clock providing information, communication, and emergency medical assistance.

BCSAR has also:

  1. Delivered, filled and placed sandbags during floods.

  2. Directed traffic around mudslides and flooded areas.

  3. Assisted the Red Cross with damage assessments.

  4. Guarded specified areas from trespassers.

  5. Notified area residents of possible need to evacuate.

  6. Assisted as needed during local special events.

For several years, SAR members taught "Lost Proofing" to area 4-6th graders at UI's Clark Fork campus.  The class included basic land navigation, first aide, and survival techniques.

BCSAR EMT's responded to this two vehicle accident on US 95 at the Flea Market in Sagle.  They assisted ambulance and fire department crews in extricating one driver and in caring for and loading the other 6 injured persons in waiting ambulances.

BCSAR EMT's also served as first responders in areas where they lived or where they could get to when the ambulance could not.  When Northside Fire Dept. did not have emergency medical personnel, BCSAR EMT's were available to provide rehab as needed.
